If you really want the best, regardless of price, then there are high-end places that offer 'real' silver-halide prints on real B&W fiber-based papers (instead of the Ilford resin-coated papers)-including in many cases with the option for actual toning with selenium or whatever you want (within reason)-and also places that offer custom prints with inkjets and/or similar processes. Mpix is also good and has very reasonably prices, but again, they don't offer glossy color paper either. For a good-quality, moderate cost lab, I've had good results with Aspen Creek ( ), which is a division of the higher-end West Coast Imaging (good, more options, much more expensive, ). Any lab that can produce accurate color prints should be able to produce neutral B&W prints and/or properly-tinted prints with the desired color cast / faux toning. As to not getting prints on regular color photographic paper right, have you carefully calibrated and profiled your monitor with a decent hardware device (X-Rite or similar)? If not, then the problem is more likely to be you / your monitor than it is a reasonably-competent lab. If you want tinted / toned-looking prints then your options are much more varied, both in quality and price.

If you want somewhere substantially cheaper than either of those, and also offering larger sizes, Mpix offers prints on 'real' B&W paper, but only Ilford's "pearl" finish, which is about like a "luster", and IMO tends to at least give the appearance of reduced contract / density range see.

"Your digital images will be printed on professional grade Ilford Galerie Digital Silver Black & White RC paper. Another option that I have actually used is Fromex, which also offers prints on Ilford glossy 'real' B&W paper. This is a medium weight RC black and white paper available in pearl and glossy finish." See. They say, "What paper do you print to? Black and white is printed on ILFORD MULTIGRADE EXPRESS. Neither should be grey, only grey should be grey.įor neutral prints at moderate prices, which I tend to suspect is really your question-maybe not "best" at any cost but good to very good: I would try glossy paper 'real' black and white silver-halide prints from Ilford's own U.S. Also I'm concerned with getting proper dynamic range - nice rich blacks and clean whites. I have tried some inexpensive prints and many had unwanted color casts to neutral files, worse yet they couldn't get the color cast right in tinted files. I'm looking for a great lab for getting prints made from my B&W files. Some labs print digital to classic fiber, but the choice is limited to Ilford, and while it's not the geatest fiber in terms of dynamics it's light years better than RC.įine art based labs printing to Baryta paper via high end ink-jets are going to give you even better results.

Much of this had a lot to do with Ilford's low energy developers. Kodak made the best RC paper in terms of dynamics, but it's long gone. Ilford RC B&W has historically sucked in terms of density range, and that's the RC paper typically used in digital printers. Modern RA-4 color papers have better D-max than classic RC B&W, and I've compared RC B&W to Fuji color RA-4, and the color paper stomped it hands down in terms of density range. It's a complete and total waste of time and will produce results worse than a properly calibrated Frontier printing in greyscale mode on color paper.
